The International Hydropower Association (IHA) is the voice of sustainable hydropower.
We are a non-profit membership organisation with members operating in over 120 countries.
Our mission is to advance sustainable hydropower by building and sharing knowledge on its role in renewable energy systems, responsible freshwater management and climate change solutions.
We achieve this through research and policy initiatives and championing sustainable good practices.
A trusted, credible voice
We provide information and guidance to decision-makers and practitioners.
We build and share knowledge through our strong partnerships with a wide range of stakeholders including governments and multilateral institutions, and civil society, finance, scientific and academic sectors.
The Hydropower Status Report, our flagship publication, is an authoritative briefing on global trends impacting the hydropower sector.
Monitoring the sector
We monitor sector developments and maintain a global hydropower database.
We foster and coordinate scientific research and industrial innovation which seeks to address the most pressing challenges facing the hydropower sector.
Our in-house experts provide regular, exclusive briefings on news developments, sector trends and international good practices through our online community Hydropower Pro.

Promoting good practices
We champion continuous improvement and sustainable good practices.
Our members are encouraged to use the Hydropower Sustainability Tools, a set of good practice guidelines and tools for assessing project performance against recognised environmental, social and governance performance criteria.
These tools are aligned with the World Bank and IFC performance standards and so help projects achieve good practice in hydropower development and secure investments.
Our training and capacity building courses are geared towards companies that seek to develop or report on projects which meet good and best practice.
Recognising industry leaders
We recognise the achievements of sustainable hydropower organisations.
Our members are recognised internationally for their commitment to delivering projects which support the Sustainable Development Goals and Paris Agreement.
Leading developers, operators and manufacturers among our membership have worked on many of the world’s most acclaimed hydropower projects, including the winners of the IHA Blue Planet Prize.
Informing renewables policy
We advance strategies for integrating hydropower with fastgrowing variable renewables.
Our knowledge building programmes help inform energy policymaking and improve the investment climate for responsible hydropower projects.
Our advocacy increases awareness of hydropower’s importance to sustainable development, as well as the unique storage and flexibility services it provides to support the clean energy transition.
IHA Central Office
Our work programmes and membership services are supported by IHA Central Office, based in London, UK.
